17 Months :)

It dawned on me this morning I haven't been very good about blogging Brie's monthly milestones recently...and since I'm also not good at updating her baby book I realized I should get back on track!  Our little miss turned 17 months old yesterday, it's so hard to believe she will be 1 1/2 years old next month!  She is growing, changing and learning new things each day--it is so much fun to watch her take in the world around her!  Here are a few things she's been up to lately:
  • Repeats LOTS of words, she even attempted "Abigail" last night and did a pretty great job imitating it.  Her new favorite word is "LIGHT!"  She is loving all the Christmas lights, as well as all other lights :).  Her other favorites that we hear often are "More" (which is basically her way of saying, "I want what you are having."), "AGAIN!" and "No-no".
  • Has become very opinionated about which books are read to her and if she is not happy with the selection will tell you "NO-NO".  Mommy and daddy officially have no say anymore in the story selections :).
  • Loves the playground and going down the slide.  This little fearless wonder grabs onto the hand rail, walks herself up the stairs, plops herself down on the slide, gives herself a push, and whooshes down.  According to reports, the apple did not fall far from either tree :).
  • Is a pretty good little eater, but definitely has an affinity for cheese and anything with cheese, as well as peanut butter.
  • Is very easy (most days) to put down to bed at night; however, likes to vary her wake up time greatly from day-to-day.  It's still hard to determine if she'll wake up raring to go at 5am or 7am.  We cherish those 7am days!
  • Has graduated to napping on a mat when she's at daycare two days a week--what a big girl!  From the reports, she lays right down and goes to sleep like a good girl.  Hmmm...wish she would do that for naps at home!
  • Is LOVED more than she will ever know or imagine!  She is the light of our lives and we thank God each day for blessing us with her!

Happy 17 Months Brie!!

Cruise Fun!

Last Thursday afternoon mom, Re, Kat and I set sail on the Carnival Triumph to beautiful, sunny Cozumel.  It was SO much fun!  Here's some of the fun things we got to do on our girl's vacation together:
  • Celebrated Re and the start of her 30th year with a fancy dinner and some of the wait staff LOUDLY singing her Happy Birthday, then Re and I had fun doing a martini tasting and we finished up the evening with a little dancing at the Hollywood club
  • Kat and I enjoyed the warm sun and spent most of day two relaxing on the "quiet deck"...the sun doesn't like Re so she and mom had fun at the casino before joining us for a bit by the pool
  • Got really dressed up for the cruise elegant night and had fun getting our pictures taken
  • Spent an AWESOME day shopping and dining in Cozumel...Re and I also enjoyed the best margarita either of us had ever had--yum!
  • We all tried our hand at a little gambling on our final day at sea...and all of us lost miserably...oh well!
  • Had fun mini-golfing up on the sports deck...nothing like putt-putt with an incredible ocean view!
  • Spent some more time reading in the sun...finished a whole book on the cruise!  Yay!
  • Enjoyed our final fancy dinner and a great show by the Carnival Triumph entertainers...they were amazing!  We then enjoyed the Michael Jackson tribute hour in the dance club where we even got Re out on the dance floor--fun times!
  • Enjoyed frozen yogurt at all times of the day, everyday...there's nothing quite like 24/hour availability of frozen yogurt :)
I am so glad us girls got to go on this cruise and enjoy time together.  It makes me so sad they all live so far away and we can't be together more often.  At least Christmas is only two and a half weeks away so I'll get to see them all again soon!

Happy Birthday Reanna--thanks for letting us all celebrate with you in such a special way!

Ready to set sail from Galveston!

Time for our first fancy dinner :)

We'll Be On a Boat...

...Or a ship.  Justin insists that cruise ships should be called ships.  I like to call them boats.  To each his own :).  Anyhow, in just 10 days me, mom, Reanna, and Kat will all be setting sail to Cozumel Mexico!  Yahoo!  We are going on a girls cruise to celebrate Reanna's 30th birthday.  What fun!  While I'll admit I'm a teensy bit sad to leave Justin and Brie behind, I know that us girls are going to have a fabulous time relaxing, soaking up rays, reading, eating good food, and so much more!

Happy Early Birthday Reanna--I'm so glad you're turning 30 and you wanted me to help you celebrate in such a fun and fabulous way!  Love you sister!

And um, this picture is the most recent I could find and it's from my baby shower, I think we need to take more sister pics while on the cruise!!!

Another 13.1 In the Books!

Last Saturday was the PERFECT running weather.  It was, by far, the most fun run I've ever done and I owe most of that to the lovely cool weather and my running buddy Laura.  When I ran this same course two years ago I was all by myself...literally there was hardly ever any other runners around me.  It was much smaller that year and it was very lonely.  In addition, they had billed the course as "flat"...and it has a few monster hills...after the turnaround (so...nice downhill going out...not so nice uphill coming back).
This year I was prepared (as I could be) for the hills, plus I had Laura along with me to randomly chat with (neither of us was up for chatting the whole 13.1 miles, but it was nice to have some conversation every now and then).  Laura also helped me mentally and physically not let myself slow down towards the end.  When I'm by myself I have a tendency to start to "lag", but with Laura along side me it kept me going at a good pace.  This all meant we had a great race and finished 10 minutes faster than I did 2 years ago (I'm still amazed by that!).
While I've been a little sore the last couple of days, I think overall I've recovered quite well.  I'm not planning another 1/2 marathon any time soon, it is just too time consuming with a toddler around to do all the long training runs.  But, in a town like Austin you can find a 5K or 10K almost every weekend, so I'll be trying to run some shorter races, which are much more manageable :).

Saturday afternoon we got to attend Brie's first fall fest at her daycare.  She did great and loved running around in her monkey costume.  I'm quite sad that I have to leave town on Wednesday and will miss her first trick-or-treating experience.  She LOVES carrying around her purple pumpkin bucket and even says "Ti-Ti" (trick-or-treat).  It will be up to my awesome friends and Justin to take some good pictures for me :).  Unfortunately on Saturday I left my camera in the car, so I didn't get any pictures at the fall fest.  Bummer.  So, you're just stuck with my two race pictures :).

Before the race...we look kind of crazy-eyed...I think it was the crazy iPhone flash

Yay!  13.1 Done!

Ready. "Fast. Easy. Fun. Run 13.1."

Ready or not, my second 1/2 marathon begins in 2 1/2 hours.  Yikes!  But, I think I'm ready.  While I had a blip in my training this time, having to take off four weeks for a very badly sprained ankle, I've spent the last 7 weeks training as hard as possible (it is so much harder to train with a 1-year-old in the house!) and while I may not (OK, definitely will not) be the fastest gal out there...I will have fun!
The quote above: "Fast. Easy. Fun. Run 13.1" is from a shirt from one of the many races Austin has each year.  I see multiple people wearing it each time I go to a local loop to run.  It always makes me chuckle because, well...I don't run it fast.  I don't think I would say it's "easy".  But, in the end, it is pretty fun.
Wish me luck...I'll have my groovy socks on (my good friend and author Erin MacPherson bought them for the girls in our group that are all running today!).

Trooper

Who would guess this little munchkin endured four shots just a few hours before this photo was taken?
What?  Shots?  Psshhhh...

Our little lady had a nice little growth spurt since her one year appointment...except her head...it's still very, very small (but full of smart brains!).  Here are her official 15 month stats:
Weight: 21.1lb (25-50%)
Height: 31 in (50-75%) (She grew 1.75 in in 3 months...wow!)
Head: 43.5 cm (Under 5%)

As you can see, she took her shots very well, didn't even bother taking a nap this afternoon, and just went on with her normal routine of trying to climb everything in sight :).  We sure do love this little monkey!

Pumpkin Festival Fun!

Today we took Brie to experience her first pumpkin patch...in shorts and short-sleeves.  Not precisely how I remember pumpkin patches/apple orchards growing up...but that's what we get for living in Texas I guess :).
Even though she won't remember it, she did seem to really enjoy herself.  It was a pretty farm (it's actually a Christmas tree farm...I was trying to picture going out to this place to cut down our very own tree...but without cold weather and/or snow I couldn't quite do it).  There lots of animals, a hay bale maze, hay ride, train ride, pumpkins, and lots of other fun stuff.  I think our favorite part was watching a sheep dog demonstration, very cool!  We tried to get some really cute "pumpkin patch" photos...but Brie was much more interested in playing with the pumpkins (or "balls" as she called them) than posing for pictures.  Oh well, maybe next year we can convince her to sit still for a few seconds :).  Here are a few shots from our fun day--hopefully we can make it a tradition to go to this place!

Looking at the dogs...oh wait, those are goats...

Best pic I could get on the hay stack with pumpkins :)

And best pic we could get with the height sign...this one-year-old does NOT want to stand still!

Brie's favorite part?  The swings of course!

Another picture ma?  I want to go play with the pumpkins!

I think this was the best smile all day...who would have thought?

Beach Trip and Other Random Stuff

Oops.  Seems like school started and I've let blogging go to the wayside.  So, here's a little recap of what we Halvorsens have been up to :).

A couple weekends ago we went on our third annual beach trip with our community group from church.  We've been friends with most of these people over six years now, and we love them and their children dearly.  Two years ago we started a tradition of going to Port Aransas after Labor Day (when it's still BEAUTIFUL in Texas, but rates are cheap (yay!)).  That year we had 10 adults and five kids on the trip, and we were kid-less.  Fun times.
 Justin and I--2010 Beach Trip

Last year we sky-rocketed to 12 adults (2 of whom were pregnant) and nine kids...and Brie was only 8 weeks old when we went.  Needless to say I spent most of my time in the condo, but it was still fun.
Beach Trip 2011--Awww...Brie was so little!

This year we had 13 adults and 13 kids...everyone in the whole group (except one who had to work) was able to attend...it was AWESOME.  The kids in our group are so great and pretty much everyone has at least someone close to their age to play with.  Brie is lucky and has four other kiddos all pretty much the same age as her.
Beach Trip 2012--My how times have changed :)

I really do think this year was my most favorite beach trip of them all.  Watching Brie really experience the ocean for the first time, laugh at the waves, and dig into the sand was just awesome.  The beach trip is only going to get more and more fun :)!

In other random news, I've been keeping busy training for my second 1/2 marathon.  Most of the girls in my community group are doing the same 1/2 marathon that I tackled two years ago, so I thought, why not?  It's definitely MUCH harder this time, trying to figure out when to train, taking Brie with me in the jogging stroller sometimes, and just in general having to get my cardio fitness back up to a better level.  When I ran two years ago, I'd NEVER run more than a mile, but I was at the gym at least 5-6 days a week and was very fit.  This time, while I can say I have run a 1/2 marathon before, I don't get to the gym 5-6 days a week (shocking, right?) and I'm just not as fit as I was pre-Brie.  But, I'm pushing through, and despite an ankle sprain that knocked me out for almost a month and threatened to derail me, I'm on track to complete the 1/2 marathon on Oct. 27th.  Wish me luck.  :)

And, just for fun, here are some fun things Brie's been doing recently:
  • Takes her socks and/or shoes and tries to put them on her feet (OK, not even always her own socks and shoes...really, anyone's socks and shoes...).  While doing this she says "Shhhhhhh" for shoes.  Cute.  Totally cute.
  • Climbs.  Everything.  No really.  EVERYTHING.  Her toys, her stroller, the bakers rack, chairs.  Apparently one of her parents was also like this as a toddler.  I have no idea who.
  • Thinks "no" is the funniest word ever.  (Which is really great considering her love of climbing everything in sight.)
  • Loves to pull all the books off her bookshelf and then sit and "read".  She even appears to "read" left to right and makes sure her books are the right side up.  I love seeing her develop pre-reading skills!
  • Is saying and/or signing lots of words, including "more", "please", "milk", "water", "bird", "dog", "bye-bye" and "da da" (she actually says "da da" to Justin..."mama" to me...not so much...bummer...
And here's a couple recent pictures of our little climber:
Sierra, despite her faults, has turned out to be the best.dog.ever :)

Did I mention she likes to climb?  Including into and out of her toy box...

Monkey

Brie continues to put a smile on our faces everyday (actually, multiple times per day) and lately this is often because we watch her discovering yet another toy or object she can climb.  She is definitely our little monkey; is very brave; has no fear and is not afraid of a bump or scrape :).  She's keeping us on our toes, but it is so fun to watch her learn and try out new skills!  Here's a few pictures of her recent climbing adventures...

We're also loving that it's football season once again!  We don't watch much TV, but in the fall/winter on the weekends there's sure to be football on :).  We let Brie watch a little bit of the first Husker game, and she sure enjoyed cheering for her mommy's favorite team!

Beautiful...

In the mail today we received this beautiful, amazing blanket from a mommy friend in Arizona.  I met her through an online group of women who all had babies last July.  Her baby, Kaiya, was born just two days before Brie.  We had a birthday buddy exchange, and she made this for Brie:
Brie was enchanted with all the patterns and colors and I know this blanket is going to be a favorite of hers!!
She also made Brie this super cute onesie that she wore for her birthday pictures :)

Then I asked her to please embroider a canvas tote bag with the monkey, her name and polka dots like on her onesie--and it came today with the blanket!  Now Brie has a super cute new bag to tote to daycare on Tuesdays and Thursdays :)!!

We are so lucky to have such a talented mommy friend :)!

Our Awesome One-Year-Old

It's so hard to believe that a whole year has come and gone since we welcomed little Brielle into our family.  A lot has happened this past month and while I still like to think of her as my baby (and I'm guessing I may always), she is definitely well on her way into toddler-hood.
We had a wonderful time celebrating her birthday with two photo shoots (one with grandma & grandpa Long as part of their birthday present and one of mostly Brie with a few family shots done by our amazing photographer friend Michael Samaripa of Inner Light Creations (password for our album is huskers)); three times eating cake (wowzers!); a party; and lots of fun new clothes and toys to enjoy.

Brie is surely a blessed (and spoiled) little girl!
Here are a few new happenings and stats about Brie:
  • Took her first steps!  She took her first wobbly steps on June 22nd, but just this past week she's really taken off and is walking everywhere!  She's quite proud of herself :)!
  • Has 8 teeth with at least 5-6 (maybe more?) on the way...and the last two popped in without me even really noticing that she was teething.  She is such a good teether!
  • Weighs in at 19.5lbs (25%)
  • Is 29.25 in. tall (60%)
  • Still has an itty bitty head just below the 5%
  • Is starting to sign more!  She has signed "milk" for a very long time, but recently has added "banana" (and says "nana" when she signs it), "please" (and often says the "pl" sound when she signs it), and "more".  It's pretty cute and I've started signing even more to her now that she's picking up on it.
  • Can now get herself up to standing without using an object or person for help...this new trick happened just today!
We are looking forward to the next year and watching Brie continue to learn and grow!  She is going to keep us on our toes...that's for sure!

NE Trip Summer 2012

I've been home for over a week now and realized I never blogged about our awesome trip back to NE...oops.  I blame it on a combination of a crazy week at VBS combined with coming down with the nastiest sore throat ever.  Seriously, EVER.  Anyhow, Brie and I flew up to NE on Friday June 29th.  She was a pretty good flight companion, considering she's an 11-month-old who really just wants to run around and play, not sit on mommy's lap for almost 2 hours.  Luckily we had great seat partners on both of our flights:  a five-year-old boy who liked showing her his Pokemon toys and Power Ranger books, and a super old great-grandma lady who liked playing patty-cake with her and let her touch her shirt (Brie was fascinated with her shirt).  All in all, the trip there went great and we were so happy to touch down safely in G.I. and see grandma Long :).

On Saturday, Katherine and Ella arrived from Dallas, and it was time for some serious cousin fun.  They had great times stealing toys back and forth, following each other around, and swimming in the pool grandma bought for them.  Those two girls are seriously the cutest girls around.

On Monday I drove over to Columbus to see my dear friend from HS, Rachael, and her beautiful children.  Nora is their newest addition and she was such a sweetheart.  There's nothing quite like holding a sleeping newborn!  It was so good to see Rachael and catch up for a bit!  Unfortunately, I remembered to put my camera in the diaper bag, but I didn't remember to take it out and actually take any pictures (might have been due to that beautiful baby sleeping in my arms!).

On Tuesday, Justin arrived from MN and the family was almost complete.  Sadly, my Justin had to remain in TX (which turned out to sort of a be a good thing since our AC went kaput and he was home to have it checked out and replaced), so we were never quite complete.  Then, on Wednesday (aka the Fourth of July) we celebrated mom's birthday (the big 6-0...but I didn't tell you that!).  We had a great day full of wonderful food, swimming and a trip to the park.  After the girls were in bed we enjoyed a great fireworks show courtesy of Justin, and our neighbors.  The people who live behind my parents must have pooled together LOTS of funds and bought some really AMAZING (and possibly illegal?) fireworks.  We moved our chairs to the perfect location on the lawn so we could enjoy both our own fireworks, and their super awesome fireworks.  While it was fun, and beautiful, Kat and I agreed that fireworks with a sleeping baby inside the house are not quite as much fun.  With each loud boom, squeal and pop we anxiously awaited to see if it woke up one of the girls.  Thankfully, somehow, they slept through it all.  Phew!

On Thursday we were able to go visit my grandma, Brie's great-grandma Long.  She also got to meet some of her second cousins, one of whom was born only two days before her!  It was a lot of fun to see grandma and play with the other cousins!

On Friday, we were able to get together with some of my great friends from high school.  I got to meet Amanda's sweetie-pie Charlotte and catch up with Amy, my fellow educator friend :).  It's always fun when it works out to see "old" friends when I'm back "home".

Sadly, on Saturday, we had to bid farewell to Justin, Kat and Ella.  This was an especially hard goodbye for me, because they were not heading back to TX where they've been living for the last four years, but instead they were headed up to MN.  I got really used to knowing that I would see them again within a month or two, so it was really hard to say good-bye knowing that I won't likely see them again until Nov. or Dec.  I'm happy for them, but so sad for us as well!  Bittersweet indeed!

Then, on Sunday, it was Brie and I's turn to say farewell.  Mom, dad and Re are heading down here for Brie's birthday, so luckily it wasn't as hard to say goodbye to them, knowing I'd see them again in 10 short days.  The return trip home was not quite as enjoyable as the trip to NE.  It started off with the CRAZY, INSANE security at the GI airport (yes, the teeny-tiny-in a town of 50,000 airport).  The very first question the TSA lady asked me was if I had baby food (Austin airport, didn't ask, and if they saw it in my bag during the scan, didn't care).  I said, "Yes."  Then she wanted to know if it could be opened.  I said, "No, if it's opened then it has to be refrigerated."  She was all, "Ohhhh, well, that's OK, but that means ALL of your belongings will have to go through extra security and we'll have to do a pat down of you and the child."  Ummmm...pat down my 11-month-old.  This was all happening very fast and I wasn't sure about that one...but she led me aside and then talked to another guy and then told me they were calling their "communications headquarters" in Omaha to see if they really had to pat down Brie.  Luckily, the guy came back and said they only had to pat-down me.  Yay.  Never had a pat-down before, especially not for GASP! having baby food with me.  Oh, and that extra screening of all my belongings?  Yup, that pretty much meant they unpacked my entire perfectly packed diaper bag.  That lady was all, "Oh, don't worry sweetie, I'll help you re-pack it."  Awesome.  Except she finished unpacking it, picked up the diapers, said "Now let's see, I remember these were here....and hmmm...that's about all I remember."  Awesome.  Sure, I'll just put my squirmy baby down here in the stroller and let her watch me repack everything.  Wonderful.  Don't get me wrong, I'm glad there are safety precautions, but really?  For baby food?  In the GI airport?  I honestly think maybe the TSA there is just a tad bit bored, given there are only like 3 or 4 flights that leave there each day.  Anyhow, we finally got through that mess and were ready to take off from GI.  There was a very nice lady next to me who spied an open seat and said she would grab it so that I could have an empty seat next to me.  Phew!  Good call lady, especially since about 10 minutes after reaching cruising altitude I sniffed a familiar, not so pleasant scent.  Thank goodness for that extra seat next to me, and those ridiculously expensive baking soda scented diaper trash bag thingies.  I'm sure everyone at the back of the plane loved me:).  The whole rest of the flight consisted of Brie sitting on my lap for 10 seconds, then sitting over on the empty seat for 10 seconds, then standing at my feet for 10 seconds...and repeat.  She was actually quite tired, but pretty much hates to go to sleep, especially if someone is holding her...so yeah, that was fun.  Luckily her cries only lasted about 5-10 seconds before I was able to distract her, but I'm sure we weren't the favorites on the flight.  She was very good during the layover, because she finally fell asleep as I cruised DFW.  Thank goodness for that nap, because our flight was delayed and we were going to be arriving well past bed time.  Again, Awesome.  We were finally boarded and ready to take off from DFW, and we were seated next a very nice man who told me he had four daughters, two of whom were twins.  Thank goodness for another good seat partner!  And, Brie was very interested in him and just kept staring at him, I think she knew he was a kind soul.  Just as we're thinking we're going to take off, the plane comes to a stop and the pilot announces there are dangerous winds and we will have to wait it out.  Cool.  Luckily, Brie was AWESOME and just chilled in my lap, actually let me read her stories, and was not her usual squirmy self.  After about 20 minutes on the tarmac, they finally announced we'd be leaving soon.  Brie was great during the short flight to Austin and we were so glad when we touched down.  But then, we stopped on the tarmac.  The pilot announced that due to bad weather in the area, lots of planes had diverted to Austin and there were no gates for us to go to.  Cool.  We had to wait almost 20 minutes for a gate.  This would not have been too bad, except that about one minute after telling us we had to wait for the gate, I sniffed that unpleasant smell again.  And this time?  No open seat next to me to take care of it.  No open seat anywhere in fact.  Awesome.  So, after squirming around the whole time we were waiting for the gate, just as we were about ready to de-plane, I felt something wet on my arm.  Yep, it's just what you're thinking.  Awesome.  Luckily, it wasn't too bad, and I was able to get off the plane and rush to the family restroom to get Brie in some new gear.  At least we were finally home!  It was quite the ending to a long, fun trip in NE and I will say that I'm quite glad the next flight we will be taking we will have daddy along!
^^One of my favorite pictures from the trip!
